Many children experience language delays secondary to autism, pervasive developmental disorder, Down syndrome, and a host of other developmental problems. It is essential that these little ones are provided with a way to communicate with their loved ones. As their child’s speech pathologist, parents and other caregivers are constantly asking me to suggest materials that they can use with their child in the home to support concepts developed in therapy sessions. Loving, concerned parents and caregivers are desperately searching for resources to supplement their child’s speech-language therapy, and more importantly, be involved, with helping their child become empowered through their increased functional communication abilities. In order to help meet their needs, I have written The StoryBook Changes! ™ series, a powerful tool designed to do just this. I was inspired to write The StoryBook Changes! Series after providing treatment for over twelve years to children who have language delays secondary to autism, Down Syndrome and other speech and language delays. In 1983, autism was diagnosed in every 1 in 10,000 toddlers. Today, new findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put the prevalence of a diagnosis of autism at one in 150 children — that is more than childhood cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined. Children who are language delayed need 30 to 40 hours a week of physical, speech, and/or occupational therapy, which costs upward of $70,000 a year. The current economy is not helping these parents and currently, only 17 states have legislation requiring at least some insurance coverage for speech and language treatment, which means most families must pay out of pocket. These parents are searching for resources to use in their homes, because the average family does not have an extra $70,000 and must work with the specialists to help their children.
